Are we Sheeple or Sheep of His Pasture?

by Pastor Vincent Rhodes

Scripture:

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27

Introduction

Recently, under one of my own videos on whether God has cursed America for supporting Israel’s mistreatment of the Palestinians, a frustrated viewer left this comment:

“My question is has God cursed America already because we are captured and ruled by a bunch of deceitful tyrants who more closely represent the seven deadly sins than any fruits of the spirit. And we also have a bunch of stout-hearted sheeple that are completely willing to go along with every infringement of our God-given rights that some self-important overpaid entitled politician puts on a piece of paper.”

That person’s frustration is understandable. When we look around, it seems like the nation is full of “sheeple” — people who will go along with anything as long as they don’t have to stand for truth. But here’s how I replied:

“The very idea that we have ever been brave and free was a concept they invented and fed to us from the textbooks that they used to brainwash and indoctrinate us for years. Maybe all of our historical stories of revolutionaries, from Paul Revere to General George Washington, were all made up to make us believe we were brave. In reality, we are all cowards and there are no real heroes. The only true Hero is Jesus Christ who bravely went to the cross for our sins.”

Point 1: The Myth of Our Freedom

We were told America was “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” But was it ever truly so? Or was that simply propaganda to make us trust in human institutions rather than God?

The Bible says, “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help” (Psalm 146:3). True freedom has never come from governments, constitutions, or revolutions. True freedom is found only in Christ: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).

Point 2: Sheeple vs. Sheep of Christ

Yes, we see people acting like sheeple — blindly following the culture, the media, or political leaders. But here’s the truth: God never called us to be wolves, lions, or rebels. He called us to be sheep.

The difference is not whether we are sheep, but whose sheep we are.

  • If we follow the world, we will be deceived.
  • If we follow the politicians, we will be enslaved.
  • But if we follow Christ, we will have life.

Jesus said: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27).

Point 3: A Nation Led by Sin

The commenter was right about one thing: our rulers resemble the seven deadly sins more than the fruit of the Spirit.

  • Pride instead of humility.
  • Greed instead of generosity.
  • Lust instead of purity.
  • Wrath instead of patience.
  • Envy instead of contentment.
  • Gluttony instead of temperance.
  • Sloth instead of diligence.

Proverbs 29:2 says, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” And yes — America mourns.

Point 4: The Only True Hero

But here’s where we must turn our eyes: the heroes of history may or may not be real, but the Hero of the cross is.

Jesus Christ is the only true Hero. He faced death without flinching. He bore our sins on His shoulders. He conquered the grave. Washington and Revere may inspire legends, but Jesus Christ inspires salvation.

Conclusion: Who Is Your Shepherd?

So the question is not, “Are we sheeple?” The question is: Who is our Shepherd?

If our Shepherd is this world, then yes—we are nothing but sheeple, blindly following a system headed for destruction.
But if our Shepherd is Christ, then we are His flock, guided by His Spirit, redeemed by His blood, and destined for His kingdom.

Psalm 100:3 says: “Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.”

So let us stop chasing the myths of earthly bravery and start following the only true Hero—Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd, who laid down His life for His sheep.
