In Luke 13:5, Jesus declares, “Unless you repent, you shall likewise perish.”
This powerful statement cuts to the heart of human pride and self-righteousness. In this morning’s devotional, I reflected on why no one can ever be good enough to escape their final hour on this earth.
No matter how moral, generous, or kind a person may be, the reality remains—we all die. Physical death is the great equalizer, reminding us that human goodness cannot shield us from tragedy or the grave. Yet, Jesus’ words reach beyond the physical realm. His warning points to something far more serious: the eternal consequences of sin.
To perish, in the sense Jesus spoke of, is not merely to face physical death but to face eternal separation from God. The most tragic fate of all is not dying, but dying in our sins—without repentance and without Christ.
This sobering truth confronts every one of us with a choice. Jesus’ words were not meant to frighten but to awaken. They are an urgent invitation to turn from sin, to humble ourselves before God, and to receive His mercy through faith in Christ.
Let this be a solemn reminder:
“Except you repent, you shall likewise perish.”
May we take His warning to heart and respond with repentance, for in repentance there is life, forgiveness, and eternal hope.
